"Empowering the North: 25,000 Solar-Powered Houses at Rs. 50,000 Each for Underprivileged Communities"

In a significant move towards social upliftment, plans are underway to construct 25,000 houses, each equipped with solar power electricity, priced at Rs. 50,000, for the underprivileged residents of the Northern Province. A constructive discussion took place, featuring the Co-Chairman of the Northern Province Development Committee and Fisheries Minister, Douglas Devananda, on Friday (1), focusing on the implementation of President Wickremesinghe's vision to provide affordable housing for the region's impoverished population.

During the discussions, cooperative societies highlighted the shortage of sugar in the Jaffna District, emphasizing that the existing stocks were insufficient for distribution among the people in the Northern Province. Responding promptly, Minister Devananda engaged with Trade and Commerce Minister Nalin Fernando, leading to the decision to dispatch an additional 100 metric tons of sugar to the Northern Province. The Minister has taken proactive measures to distribute this stock to 48 Cooperative Societies in the region.

The discussion, held at the District Secretariat in Jaffna, saw the participation of officials, including Jaffna District Secretary Ambalavanar Sivabalasundaram, Additional District Secretary Maruthalingam Pratheepan, and the Divisional Secretaries of Jaffna District. This holistic approach not only addresses the housing needs of the underprivileged but also showcases a responsive approach to the immediate concerns of the community, reinforcing the commitment to comprehensive development in the Northern Province.
