Police to Reward Courageous Youth who Filmed Welioya Child Abuse

In a commendable move, the police are set to honor the valor of a 20-year-old who captured on film the distressing assault of a four-year-old girl by her stepfather, a 45-year-old individual identified as Munasingha Kodikaralage Chaminda, known as Kukul Chaminda, in the notorious Welioya child cruelty case. The footage, which swiftly circulated across social media and various media outlets, played a pivotal role in the apprehension of the culprit and the exposure of the appalling incident.

The video graphically depicts Chaminda's reprehensible act of assaulting the child while feeding her, dismissing the youth's warnings with brazen defiance, stating, "Go on, video it. I am not afraid of the police." Chaminda now resides in Anuradhapura prison, awaiting due legal process.

Meanwhile, the innocent child has found refuge under the care of the North Western Province Department of Probation and Child Care Services at a specialized child care facility. Acting swiftly on court directives, the Welioya Police ensured the child's examination by the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) at District General Hospital, Mullaitivu, facilitating comprehensive evaluation and care.

Acting upon the initiative of IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, the police headquarters is orchestrating a cash award to acknowledge the courage and pivotal role played by the youth in curbing child cruelty. "If he had not released this to social media, this cruelty might have continued unchecked," asserted IGP Tennakoon, underlining the youth's instrumental contribution to justice.

The Circuit Magistrate Court of Padaviya has remanded the prime suspect, along with three women, including the child's mother, until June 19, on charges of complicity in the abhorrent act. Additionally, another individual has been remanded for providing shelter to the accused, underscoring the collective societal responsibility in combating such heinous crimes.
